Upcoming Elections

Election Information

In Virginia, we have elections every year. If you have any inclination to run for office, or if you know of anyone that you can encourage to run, please let us know.  We should be encouraging people to run for these positions as Democrats!

The offices you’ll vote for depend on where you live. Each county Registrar’s Office can help you with details (links available below under Polling Locations). Or visit the Virginia Department of Elections and use your zip code or the interactive maps to find out who you’ll be voting for in November 2024–in addition to the presidential election.

You can also enter your address at VPAP.org to learn who’s on the ballot, who your representatives are, and as a bonus, political donors nearby. Also at VPAP, check out Where does early voting stand?, a district-by-district breakdown that will be updated as voting gets under way in the fall.

Democratic Candidates in Our Area for 2025 Election
39th District Delegate Candidate
Eric Klotz

Eric Klotz a longtime Republican who switched parties when Donald Trump first assumed office in 2017, Klotz, 53, had watched the political landscape shift dramatically during the first few months of Trump’s second presidency. The erosion of the country’s foundational principles, especially after his years of military service, troubled him deeply.

“I did a lot of deployments overseas, and I have experience living in countries controlled by authoritarian governments. I witnessed the suppression of individual rights and liberties, something we used to believe was protected by the U.S. Constitution,” Klotz said in a phone interview. “I can’t stand idly by while that birthright is under attack here at home. I took an oath to defend the Constitution, and it’s not just for some, it’s for all.”

51st District Delegate Candidate
Joy Powers

Joy Powers campaign is focused on public education, rural infrastructure, jobs, and cost of living for Virginians. Powers said she’s eager to work across the aisle to make sure the General Assembly is advocating for people in the District.”I’m not a candidate who’s going to play party lines. Regardless, if something is good for District 51, if it comes from a Republican, great, if it comes from a Democrat, great. Honestly, I just want to serve,” Powers said.

Powers said she was approached by the Democratic Party to run and it’s an honor to be considered for the seat.

Governor of Virginia:

Abigail Spanberger

U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger is proud to represent the people of Virginia’s Seventh Congressional District in the U.S. House. Her career has been defined by public service. She first swore an oath to the U.S. Constitution as a federal agent with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. In this role, she investigated money laundering and narcotics cases — including at the southern border. Then, as a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) case officer, Spanberger worked at home and abroad to collect intelligence, keep our country safe from terrorism, and inform policymakers in their national security decisions. Following her time at CIA, she joined the private sector and helped American colleges and universities diversify their student bodies, expand opportunities for Americans entering the workforce, and increase graduation rates.

Attorney General
Jay Jones

Jay Jones is a former Assistant Attorney General and lawmaker, a husband, and a dad to two boys running for Attorney General to fight for Virginia families and stand up to Donald Trump’s dangerous agenda. A lifelong resident of Norfolk, Jay’s call to public service was generations in the making.

As a member of the House of Delegates, Jay protected abortion rights, expanded Medicaid, and gave teachers annual pay raises. In Richmond, he championed energy and environmental policies that lowered Virginians’ energy bills and protected our air, water, and land. A tireless legislator, Jay also wrote legislation known as the “Ashanti Alert,” establishing a missing persons alert for adults in the Commonwealth. The “Ashanti Alert” is now used nationwide.

Lieutenant Governor:
Ghazala Hashmi

Ghazala Hashmi  is the first Muslim and the first South Asian American to serve in the Virginia Senate. As an experienced educator and advocate of inclusive values and social justice, her legislative priorities include public education, voting rights and the preservation of democracy, reproductive freedom, gun violence prevention, the environment, housing, and affordable healthcare access.

As a state Senator, Ghazala has dedicated her efforts to improving the lives of others, focusing on issues of inequity in housing, education, health care, environmental justice, and much more.
